As a result of the vote of May 1994 annual town meeting and a subsequent override election, the Town purchased the Steele Farm on Middle Road consisting of roughly 36 acres and three buildings. The charge of the Steele Farm Advisory Committee is to make recommendations to the Board of Selectmen as to the use of the property and buildings. The Board of Selectmen feels that the town meeting vote was primarily one to "preserve the view and open space." The Board of Selectmen also feels that, given the town's fiscal future, there will only be minimal town funds available to develop/maintain/repair/renovate the property. Thus, any solution that requires significant expenditure must also have a plan of private funding. Among the issue to be considered are:
- Use of land itself: how much will be designated to conservation? recreation? general town use?
- Use of buildings: barn - good condition; house - poor condition. (The Permanent Building Committee and Building Inspector should be used as resources.)
- Productive use of the land and by whom; grazing; Christmas tree farming; other?
Members of the Steele Farm Advisory Committee are appointed by the Board of Selectmen to a three-year term.
On November 16, 2009, the Town authorized the Board of Selectmen to grant a conservation restriction and historical preservation restriction to The Trustees of Reservations and the Boxborough Historical Society respectively. The latest draft of the restriction may be found by clicking here. Your input is important to us. On Monday, October 4 at 7:30 PM in the Grange Meeting Room of Town Hall, the Board of Selectmen will hold a public forum along with the Steele Farm Advisory Committee and interested parties. Please join us and share your thoughts!
